Having Fun with Illustrator: Little Clouds

In this tutorial we are going ton create a happy little cloud in Adobe Illustrator.

Open a new Illustrator document.

Next, make a sky for our clouds. So create a 600 x 600 square with a white to blue radial gradient fill. You can adjust the gradient using the Gradient Tool (hotkey G).

Make a new layer and start making the little cloud. Make two circles (L) that will be the outer boundaries of your cloud.

We are going to build up on our cloud by making more circles of different sizes.

There, it is the top of our cloud.

Now we have to finish our basic shape. With the pen tool (P) form a shape that covers all the open space left in your cloud. You can also continue using circles or curves if you want to have a puffy bottom on your cloud.

Illustrator has a tool called the Pathfinder. We are going to use the Pathfinder to make the shapes we’ve made come together. Choose all the shapes in your cloud. Click the “Add to Shape Area” button in your Pathfinder tab and immediately after that, click the “Expand” button.

Now we are going to give the cloud some character. Thicken up the outer stroke a bit, just to make it look even a little puffier than before. Add a light grey to white linear gradient coming up from the bottom of the cloud just to give the indication of depth and shadow.

Make a few more clouds.
